"Coe Hill Beginnings"
Settlers first came to the area in 1882. The settlement became known as Welch Corners, and later Salem. When Mr. William Coe formed a company to mine the iron deposits in the 1880's, just east of Salem, a new settlement sprang-up being Coe Hill. It was in 1884 that the Central Ontario Railway extended its line from Trenton to Coe Hill to transport the iron ore form the mine. The local school was built in 1875. Later in 1949 a new elementary school was opened.
