The Bancroft area was originally named York Mills The post office was first established in 1861, and became known as York River. The communities leading business man, Senator Billa Flint, named the town Bancroft after his wife Phoebe on October 15th,1879.
The first family to settle in the area was the Clark family and they settled in 1853. By the year 1868 there were 89 families in the area.
Bancroft progressed slowly at first until lumbermen, attracted by the fine stands of pine and hardwood, came into the area.

The first doctor to visit the area was Dr. Hunt. The area's first resident doctor was Dr. T.I. Beeman, who arrived in 1888, two years after the death of Dr. Hunt.
The Bancroft Times made its debut on December 16th, 1894. The proprietor was John Bremner.
It was on January 20th, 1927 when the Red Cross Hospital opened at Bancroft.
Lumbering continued to be a major importance until 1949, when the uranium mines were discovered in Faraday. Production of the uranium began in April,1957 and continued until the 1960's.
